Naval Covers

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

USS ESSEX has received the following awards - Secretary of the Navy Letter of Commendation - Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (7) - National Defense Service Medal - Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (2).

NAMESAKE - Named after Essex County, Massachusetts.

Five ships of the US Navy have been named ESSEX - USS Essex (32-gun Sailing Frigate 1799), USS Essex (Ironclad Steamer 1864), USS Essex (Wooden Screw Steamer 1876),
USS Essex CV-9 and USS Essex LHD-2.
