1 October 1941. Submarine Division Seventy-Two was attached to Submarine Squadron Three, Submarine Base Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone. The assigned tender was USS Mallard ASR-4. The Commanding Officer of Submarine Division 72 was Cmdr. John B. Longstaff and the submarines attached to Submarine Division 72 were USS S-11 SS-116 (Flagship), USS S-12 SS-117, USS S-13 SS-118, USS S-14 SS-119, USS S-15 SS-120, USS S-16 SS-121 and USS S-17 SS-122.
