Naval Covers

Other Information

USS PORTLAND earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon (2 awards), the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon (2 awards), the Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (5 awards), the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (3 awards), the Southwest Asia Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal (2 awards), the US Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon, the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) and the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait) during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Named for cities in Oregon and Maine.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Emily Chapman, wife of General Leonard F. Chapman Jr., the Commandant of the Marine Corps.
