Other Information

USS WACCAMAW earned the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon (2 awards), the World War II Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal w/ Europe clasp, the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal w/ 1 Campaign star and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - A river in South Carolina, taking its name from a small tribe which formerly dwelt along the lower Pee Dee River and its branches in the Carolinas. Like other tribes of the region, the Waccamaw were probably incorporated with the Catawba tribe by late in the 19th century.
