Other Information

USS BROOKLYN earned the Navy Expeditionary Medal (2 awards), the Sampson Medal, the Spanish Campaign Medal, the Philippine Campaign Medal, the China Relief Expedition Medal, the Cuban Pacification Medal and the World War I Victory Medal w/ Asiatic Clasp during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - A city located at the southwestern end of Long Island, N.Y., that was incorporated into New York City in 1898 as one of six boroughs. During the American Revolution, the Battle of Long Island was fought on land that now constitutes Brooklyn, and the New York Navy Yard was established on its waterfront in 1801.

The ships sponsor was Miss Ida May Schieren, daughter of the Honorable Charles A. Schieren, Mayor of Brooklyn, New York.

Three ships of the US Navy have borne the name BROOKLYN - USS Brooklyn (1858 Screw Sloop), USS Brooklyn CA-3 and USS Brooklyn CL-40.
