Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Edsall Class Type FMR Destroyer Escort
    Keel Laid 27 January 1943 - Launched 14 April 1943

  1. USS HURST DE-250
    Commissioned 30 August 1943 - Decommissioned 1 May 1946
Struck from Naval register 1 December 1972

  2. ARM COMMODORE MANUEL AZUETA A-06 (Mexican Naval Service)
Transferred to Mexico 1 October 1973, and renamed

  3. ARM COMMODORE MANUEL AZUETA PERILLOS E-30 (Mexican Naval Service)

  4. ARM COMMODORE MANUEL AZUETA D-111 (Mexican Naval Service)
Decommissioned from the Mexican Navy 2015

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. Covers Page 1     (DATE RANGE)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

Other Information

The USS HURST DE-250 earned the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Edwin William Hurst USN (October 16 1910 - June 9 1942)
Hurst graduated from the Naval Academy in 1932. After serving in USS TENNESSEE BB-43, he completed flight training in 1935. He was then assigned to several squadrons and aviation shore facilities before reporting on board USS LEXINGTON CV-2 on May 19 1941. Hurst earned two Distinguished Flying crosses. During the critical Battle of the Coral Sea May 7-8 1942, he daringly attacked carrier SHOHO, scoring hits which contributed to her sinking; and the following day severely damaged carrier SHOKAKU. While flying over the uncharted Owen Stanley range, he pressed home a successful torpedo attack in the face of heavy antiaircraft fire, severely damaging enemy shipping and installations at Salamaua and Lae, N.G. on March 10 1942. With his gallant carrier LEXINGTON sunk during the Battle of the Coral Sea, Lt. Hurst flew from New Zealand until his death June 9 1942 in a crash near Whemuapai.
