This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Postmarks
This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.
A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

NAMESAKE - Tenant McLanahan (? - February 11 1848)
McLanahan was appointed Midshipman December 12 1839 and passed Midshipman July 2 1845. He served in PREBLE in the Mediterranean Squadron; in DELAWARE, BRANDYWINE, and MACEDONIA in the Brazil, African, and East Indian Squadrons, 1840-45; and in SHARK, PORTSMOUTH and CYANE in the Pacific Squadron, 1846-48. While attached to the latter he was one of Lieutenant Heywood’s party beseiged by Mexican irregulars at San Jose, Baja California, January 24 to February 14 1848. He conducted himself in a gallant, unflinching, and devoted manner, until he was killed by a rifle shot in the neck February 11 1848
