Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Charles F. Adams Class Guided Missile Destroyer
    Keel Laid 3 August 1959 - Launched 4 August 1960

  1. USS HOEL DDG-13
    Commissioned 16 June 1962 - Decommissioned 1 October 1990

Struck from Naval Register 20 November 1992
Sold 20 June 1994, converted into power barge in Brazil

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Hoel DDG-13 Covers Page 1    (1962-76)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

NAMESAKE - Acting Volunteer Lieutenant Commander William Ryan Hoel, USN (March 7 1825 - May 23 1879).
A steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River, he joined the US Navy in October 1861 and played a very important role on the Western Rivers during the rest of the Civil War. Wounded in action on board the ironclad gunboat USS Cincinnati during the battle of Fort Henry on February 6 1862, he recovered in time to pilot USS Carondelet past the Confederate fortress on Island Number Ten some two months later. In May 1862, Acting Volunteer Lieutenant Hoel took command of the USS Cincinnati while she was under salvage and repair. In October of that year he became Commanding Officer of sister gunboat USS Pittsburg, taking her through operations in the vicinity of Vicksburg, Mississippi. On April 29 1863, he courageously used his ship to protect the flagship USS Benton when that vessel was endangered by enemy fire during the bombardment of Grand Gulf, Mississippi. In March-July 1865, Acting Volunteer Lieutenant Commander Hoel commanded the ram USS Vindicator. He was honorably discharged from the US Navy on December 30 1865.

Three ships of the US Navy have been named HOEL - USS Hoel DD-533, USS Hoel DD-768 (canceled during construction September 13 1946) and USS Hoel DDG-13.
