Conflicting History Data

The ownership and name change dates are in question.

The original DANFS has the following progression:
- Purchased 1948 by the Pacific Far East Line, Inc and renamed SS California Bear
- Renamed SS American Bear in 1961
- Sold in 1963 to Central Gulf Steamship Corp and renamed SS Green Lake
- Taken over by United States Department of Commerce circa 1968 and renamed SS Oceanic Cloud
- In operation until 1971

Wikipedia matches DANFS except at the end where it states that the ship was "sold for scrapping on 13 October 1967 to Kuang I. Enterprises Co., China." This matches NavSource (see below) but a 1967 scrapping date contradicts prior text in the article and contradicts DANFS.

NavSource has different dates for ownership changes:
- Sold, 26 May 1947, to Pacific Far East Line Inc. and renamed SS California Bear
- Renamed SS America Bear, 24 January 1961
- Sold, 15 June 1962, to Central Gulf Steamship Corp., renamed SS Green Lake
- Sold, 4 January 1965, to Oceanic Ore Carriers, Inc., renamed SS Oceanic Cloud
- Sold for scrapping, 13 October 1967, to Kuang I. Enterprises Co., Ltd., China

Merchant Vessels of the United States shows the following progression:
- 1961 California Bear - owned by Pacific Far East Line Inc
- 1962 American Bear - owned by Pacific Far East Line Inc
- 1963-65 Green Lake - owned by Central Gulf Steamship Corp
- 1966-67 ?
- 1968 Oceanic Cloud - owned by US Secretary of Commerce
This data supports DANFS and contradicts NavSource in terms of dates

An article titled Coast Guard Patrol Boats Got MSTS Lift to Vietnam in the April 1966 issue of Sealift Magazine specifically mentions SS Oceanic Cloud as one of the MSTS-chartered ships that brought Coast Guard patrol craft from east coast ports. A 1966 date contradicts DANFS and Wikipedia but supports NavSource. Access to a 1966 or 1967 issue of Merchant Vessels of the United States would be helpful.

Note that Lloyd's Register of Shipping 1969 has no entry for Oceanic Cloud. However, it does have an entry for a Green Lake owned by Central Gulf Steamship Corp but this is a different ship. Its official number is 248700 and is listed as ex-Ernie Pyle with the name change occurring in 1965. This date also supports NavSource in terms of when Green Lake (ex-Tyrrell) was renamed Oceanic Cloud.

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. Covers Page 1     (DATE RANGE)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.
