Ship Name and Designation History
This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.
- Gridley Class Destroyer
- USS MAURY DD-401
Commissioned August 5 1938 - Decommissioned October 19 1945
Struck from Naval Register November 1 1945
Sold June 13 1946 and broken up for scrap
Keel Laid March 24 1936 - Launched February 14 1938
This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).
Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks
This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.
A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.
>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the
existing example.

NAMESAKE - Comdr. Matthew Fontaine Maury (January 14 1806 - February 1 1873)
Maury was an astronomer and hydrographer. Appointed Midshipman February 1 1825, he achieved the rank of Commander September 14 1855. He was appointed Superintendent of the Department of Charts and Instruments in 1842, and upon the establishment of the Naval Observatory in 1844 became its first superintendent, holding that position until his resignation in April 1861. During this period he published some of his best known scientific works, and his “Wind and Current Charts,” “Sailing Directions,” and “Physical Geography of the Sea” remain standard. He became world famous as “Pathfinder of the Seas,” the leading oceanograpber of history. Following his resignation at the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Navy, in which he attained the rank of Commodore. At the end of the war he occupied the chair of physics at the Virginia Military Institute. He died at Lexington, Va., February 1 1873
