Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Built in 1890 at James Laing, Sunderland, England

  1. NORSE KING (Commercial Service)
  2. Initially owned by W. Ross & Co. but records show several owners over the 1890s
Purchased by the US Navy 29 June 1898

  3. USS RAINBOW (Distilling Ship)
  4. Placed in reduced commission 18 July 1898
    Converted to a distilling ship
    Commissioned 2 December 1901 - Decommissioned 24 December 1914

  5. RAINBOW (Receiving Ship)
  6. Receiving Ship at Yerba Buena Island (San Francisco) CA 1914-1916
See US Receiving Ship - San Francisco CA for more information

  7. USS RAINBOW (Distilling Ship)
  8. Recommissioned 29 January 1916

  9. USS RAINBOW (Submarine Tender)
  10. Converted to a Submarine Tender 12 December 1917 to 2 April 1918

  11. USS RAINBOW AS-7

Struck from the Naval Register 26 June 1928

Sold for scrap 13 September 1928

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Rainbow AS-7 Covers Page 1    (1905-1925)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.
