Ship Name and Designation History
This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.
- LST-1 Class Tank Landing Ship
- USS LST-391 Commissioned December 3 1942 - Decommissioned 30 April 1947
- BOWMAN COUNTY LST-391 Renamed July 1 1955 while in reserve
- RODOS L-157 (Greek Naval Service) Transferred to Greece May 1960 and renamed
Keel Laid July 14 1942 - Launched October 28 1942
Struck from Naval Register (date unknown)
Remained in service with the Greek Navy until 1997
Fate unknown
This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).
Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.
- Covers Page 1 (1944)
Postmarks
This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.
A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.
>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the
existing example.

Note: The LST organization was promised this ship by the Government of Greece. When they went to get it, the found it was cannibalized to keep other LST's in the Hellenic Navy sailing and was not worthy to sail back to the US over open seas! They finally got ex-USS LST-325 and there have been covers commemorating that event by the Stephen Decatur Chapter No. 4, USCS and the USS New Jersey Chapter No. 90, USCS. However, this postmark was prepared, given to the volunteers who went to get her, and after that everything went wrong. The ship did not come back, and the cancel was lost by one of the volunteers, or it may have been stolen by Greek authorities, no one knows for sure. Either way, this is a unique cover commemorating "What Could Have Been...".
Cover made by Phil Schreiber, member of Chapter 90.
