Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Oliver Hazard Perry (Long Hull) Class Guided Missile Frigate
    Keel Laid 30 May 1980 - Launched & Christened 2 July 1981

  1. USS CROMMELIN FFG-37
  2. Commissioned 18 June 1983 - Deactivated 26 October 2012
    Decommissioned 31 October 2012

Sunk as a target during RIMPAC 2016, 19 July 2016

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Crommelin FFG-37 Covers Page 1     (1983-2012)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Named for five brothers: Vice Admiral Henry CROMMELIN (1904-1971), Rear Admiral John CROMMELIN (died 1997), Captain Quentin CROMMELIN (died 1997), Commander Charles CROMMELIN (died 1945), and Lieutenant Commander Richard CROMMELIN (1917-1945). CROMMELIN is the first ship of that name in the United States Navy. Born of a pioneer Alabama family in Montgomery and Wetumpka, they were the only five brothers ever to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy. Four of them became aviators. Individually and as a fighting family, they gained fame in World War II, attaining outstanding combat records and multiple decorations. Richard and Charles died in combat. John and Quentin continued distinguished naval careers until retirement. Several books have been written about them. A monument to the CROMMELINs in Battleship Park in Mobile, Alabama commemorates their bravery.

The USS CROMMELIN has earned the following awards during her Naval career - Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon w/ 3 stars, Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (7 awards), Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal w/ 1 star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal w/ 2 stars, Global War On Terrorism Service Ribbon, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/ 2 stars and the Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon w/ 1 star.

The ships sponsors are Susan C. Costenbader, Mrs. Henry Crommelin and Mrs. Richard Meyers.
