"The Ajax was at Vladivostok during the Allied Intervention Russia from March 19 to March 23, 1919. The Ajax did not have a post office so the post office of another ship at Vladivostok was used. I believe the Type 1z cancel is the [[BROOKLYN_CA_3_ | USS Brooklyn]] which was at Vladivostok from 23 Dec 1918 to 2 Apr 1919 and used a Type 1z. The view is American soldiers and tents at Vladivostok." Notes and scan courtesy of the Darrell Kinzler collection. | |||

Ship Name and Designation History
This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.
Built 1890 Purchased by U.S. Navy 12 May 1898 Recommissioned 23 December 1899 Recommissioned 1 May 1910 Recommissioned 18 October 1921 Decommissioned 8 July 1925 Struck from Naval Register (Date unknown) Sold or transferred in 1932 to Hua Khiow Steamship Co Ltd Scrapped in November 1933 in China |
This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).
Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.
- SCINDIA Covers Page 1 (1900)
- AJAX Covers Page 1 (1919-38, 2008)
Postmarks
This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.
A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.
>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the
existing example.

Other Information
SCINDIA
USS SCINDIA earned the Spanish Campaign Medal and the Philippines Campaign Medal.
NAMESAKE - The Scindia, also spelled Sindhia, Sindia, or Shinde, are a prominent Maratha family in India. The dynasty was founded by Ranoji Rao Scindia.
AJAX
USS AJAX earned the World War I Victory Medal.
NAMESAKE - A Greek hero during the Trojan War, second only to Achilles' prowess and valor. The son of Telemon of Salamis and Periboea, Ajax vied with Ulysses for the arms which had belonged to the fallen Achilles. Maddened by disappointment and anger when they were awarded to the latter, Ajax slew the Greek army's flock of sheep, mistaking them for enemies. When he regained his senses and realized what he had done, he killed himself from shame and despair.
