Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. Other Information

USS SLATER earned the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Seaman Second Class Frank Olga Slater, USNR (19 December 1920 - 12 November 1942)
Slater enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve on 10 February 1942. Upon completion of basic training, Second Class Seaman Slater was transferred to the Receiving Station, Pearl Harbor, where he was subsequently assigned to the USS SAN FRANCISCO CA-38 on 12 April 1942. On 12 November 1942, Slater was killed when a Japanese aircraft he had shot down crashed into his gun position during the battle off Guadalcanal in the Solomon’s. He was buried at sea. Slater was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for gallantry in action.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. James L. Slater, mother of Seaman Slater.
