Other Information

USS OUELLET earned the Combat Action Ribbon w/ star, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award Ribbon, the Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (5 awards), the Navy Expeditionary Medal w 1 star, the National Defense Service Medal w/ 1 star, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal w/ 2 Campaign stars, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Seaman David George Ouellet, USN (1944-1967)
On March 6 1967 while serving as the forward machine gunner on River Patrol Boat 124 on patrol on the Mekong River, Seaman Ouellet spotted an incoming enemy grenade falling toward the boat. He immediately left the protected position of his gun mount, ran aft for the length of the boat, bounded onto the engine compartment cover, and pushed the Boat Captain down to safety, placing himself between the grenade and his shipmates, absorbing most of the blast fragments. For his heroic sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
