Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Arleigh Burke (Flight III) Class Guided Missile Destroyer
    Naming Ceremony 17 September 2016 - Construction started 7 May 2018
    Keel Authentication 7 November 2019 - Launched 4 June 2021 - Christened 26 March 2022

  1. USS JACK H. LUCAS DDG-125
    Commissioned 7 October 2023

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Jack H. Lucas DDG-125 Covers Page 1     (2016-2023)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Captain Jacklyn Harold "Jack" Lucas, USMCR (14 February 1928 – 5 June 2008)
Lucas was a World War II recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima (20 February 1945) at age seventeen and six days. Lucas is the youngest Marine and the youngest serviceman in World War II to be awarded the United States' highest military decoration for valor.
PFC Lucas is the recipient of the following awards - Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one bronze star and the World War II Victory Medal.
On September 18, 1945 he was discharged from the Marine Corps Reserve because of disability resulting from his wounds.
Lucas joined the U.S. Army in 1961 and served in the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper to conquer his fear of heights, and survived a training jump in which neither of his two parachutes opened. He volunteered for Vietnam, but was not allowed to go there and ended his time as a Captain in the Army in 1965 at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, training troops for the Vietnam War.

When the keel of the USS Iwo Jima LHD-7 (christened in 2000) was laid, Lucas placed his Medal of Honor citation in the ship's hull, where it remains sealed.

The ships sponsor are Catherine B. Reynolds and Ruby Lucas. Ruby Lucas is the widow of Jack Lucas. Catherine B. Reynolds is a entrepreneur and philanthropist who has enabled millions of Americans to attend the college of their choice through her foundation work.
