Naval Covers

Other Information

USS KOELSCH earned the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon w/ 1 star, the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Award Ribbon w/ 1 star, the Navy Battle "E" Ribbon, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Lieutenant (j.g.) John Kelvin Koelsch, USN (December 22 1923 - October 16 1951).
Lt. (j.g.) Koelsch was a helicopter pilot during the Korean War. During a rescue mission of a USMC aviator, his helicopter was shot down. He, his crewman, and the rescued USMC pilot survived and evaded capture for nine days before being captured by the North Koreans. He was held a Prisoner of War and died of malnutrition and dysentery but never gave in to his captors. For his conspicuous gallantry, intrepidity, and heroic spirit of self-sacrifice, Lt. (j.g.) Koelsch was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor August 3, 1955.
