Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Ship of the Line Keel Laid August 1817 - Launched 21 October 1820 USS DELAWARE (Ship of the Line) Roofed over and kept at the yard in ordinary (reserves) until 27 March 1827     when she was ordered repaired and fitted for sea Delaware put to sea 10 February 1828 Decommissioned 10 February 1830 - Recommissioned 15 July 1833 Delaware departed 30 July 1833, for Mediterranean Squadron service Returned to Hampton Roads 16 February 1836 Placed in ordinary from 10 March 1836 until recommissioned 7 May 1841 Delaware sailed 1 November 1841 for duty on the Brazil Station Delaware departed the Brazil Station, 19 February 1843 for the Mediterranean Returned to Hampton Roads 4 March 1844 Decommissioned at Norfolk Navy Yard 22 March 1844 Burned 20 April 1861 along with other ships and the yard facilities to prevent their falling into Confederate hands.

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Seven ships of the US Navy have borne the name DELAWARE - USS Delaware (1776 24-gun Frigate), USS Delaware (1798 20-gun Ship), USS Delaware (1828 74-gun Ship of the Line), USS Delaware (1861 Side-Wheel Steamer), USS Delaware (1866 Screw Steamer), USS Delaware BB-28 and USS Delaware SSN-791.
