Bogue Class Escort Carrier Keel Laid 5 September 1941 as (AVG-14) - Launched 4 April 1942 Redesignated (ACV-14) 20 August 1942 USS CROATAN ACV-14 Commissioned 20 February 1943 - Decommissioned 27 February 1943 Transferred to the Royal Navy, 27 February 1943 HMS FENCER D-64 (British Naval Service) Commissioned 1 March 1943 US Navy redesignated her as CVE-14 on 15 July 1943 while still on loan. See HMS FENCER D-64 HMS FENCER R-308 (British Naval Service) Royal Navy designation temporarily changed to R308 for service in the Pacific, October 1944. Decommissioned 12 November 1946 USS CROATAN CVE-14 Returned to US Navy 12 November 1946 and arrived at Norfolk, Virginia, 11 December 1946 Stricken for disposal, 28 January 1947 COMMERCIAL SERVICE Sold in 1950 and converted to a passenger ship, renamed SS Sydney (Italian flag), 1950. Renamed SS Roma (1967), SS Galaxy Queen (1970), SS Lady Tina (1973), SS Caribia 2 (1973). Scrapped at La Spezia, Italy, starting September 1975

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Named after a sound off the North Carolina coast.

Two ships of the US Navy have borne the name CROATAN - USS Croatan CVE-14 and USS Croatan CVE-25.

HMS FENCER earned the following Battle Honours - Atlantic 1943-1944 — Norway 1944 — Arctic 1944 — Pacific 1945.
