In September 1943, VMF-321 left the US for Samoa and after service in the Pacific theater, the squadron returned home and was deactivated on 28 January 1946. VMF-321 was reorganized as a USMC Reserve fighting squadron in July 1946 at Naval Air Station (NAS) Anacostia, MD. On 1 April 1949, Marine Fighting Squadron 321 was redesignated Marine Fighter Squadron 321. On 15 May 1958 they were redesignated Marine Attack Squadron 321 (VMA-321) and on 1 July 1962, the squadron reverted back to VMF-321. Marine Fighter Squadron 321 was redesignated Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 321 in December 1973 when they transitioned to the F-4 Phantom. After transitioning from Phantoms, they flew F/A-18's until they deactivated on 11 September 2004.
