With enclosed letter below. 1900 Cover/ Letter from Midshipman (later Admiral) Edward Kalbfus to his grandaughter in Harrisburg Pa, worn envelope franked with 1899 2c Red pair (214) tied by Mil Sta No 2 Mar 28 duplex, includes the enclosure - a multi-page letter completely in his hand datelined "USS Petrel/ Off Cavite Manila Bay, P.I./ March 25, 1900", Fine overall; an interesting letter describing his arrival on the Petrel declaring it "...the nicest little ship.." and describing his assignment, pride in the US Navy, the sight of Spanish wrecks in Manila Bay, weather, etc. The third USS Petrel (PG-2) was a 4th rate gunboat in the US Navy during the Spanish-American War. In April 1898, Petrel became part of George Dewey's fleet in the campaign against Manila. Admiral Edward Kalbfus (1877-1954) was a four-star admiral in the US Navy and was commander of the Battle Force of the US Fleet from 1938-39, also serving as President of the Naval War College from 1934-36 and 1939-42. He was also one of the three retired line officers to sit on the Pearl Harbor Court of Inquiry. From the Gary B. Weiss collection.
