This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Postmarks

If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

USS MENGES earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the American Campaign Medal, the European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal w/ 2 Battle stars and the WWII Victory Medal during her Naval career.

USS MENGES lost about 1/3 of her stern to a German Acoustic Torpedo from German U-371. Her stern was replaced by the stern from USS Holder DE-401 also heavily damaged by torpedo.

NAMESAKE - Ensign Herbert Hugo Menges, USNR (20 January 1917 - 7 December 1941)
         Menges enlisted in The Naval Reserve as Seaman Second Class at Robertson, MO., 3 July 1939. Appointed Naval Aviator 24 July 1940, he was assigned to Squadron 6 on USS Enterprise CV-6 28 November 1940. Ensign Menges was killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941 as his squadron arrived over Pearl Harbor that morning.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Charles Menges, mother of Ensign Menges.
