Ship Name and Designation History
This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.
- Clemson Class Destroyer
- USS KENNEDY DD-306
Commissioned 28 August 1920 - Decommissioned 1 May 1930
Struck from Naval Register 18 November 1930
Sold 1931 and broken up for scrap
Keel Laid 25 September 1918 - Launched 15 February 1919
This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).
Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.
- USS Kennedy DD-306 Covers Page 1 (1924-1928)
Postmarks
This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.
A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.
>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the
existing example.

Other Information
NAMESAKE - John Pendleton Kennedy (October 25 1795 - August 18 1870)
Kennedy graduated from Baltimore College in 1812 and fought in the Battles of Bladensburg and North Point in the War of 1812. Although admitted to the bar in 1816. he was much more interested in literature and politics than law. He published "Swallow Barn" in 1832 and "Horseshoe Robinson" in 1835 to win a permanent place of respect in the history of American fiction. He was an active Whig winning a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates in 1820. In 1838 he succeeded Isaac McKim in the House of Representatives but was defeated in his bid for reelection in November of that year. He was re-elected to Congress in 1840 and 1842; but, because of his strong opposition to the annexation of Texas, he was defeated in 1844. His influence in Congress was largely responsible for the appropriation of $30,000 to test Samuel Morse's telegraph. President Fillmore appointed Kennedy Secretary of the Navy in July 1852. While he held the office, four important naval expeditions were organized including that which sent Commodore Matthew C. Perry to Japan. Kennedy retired from public life in March 1853 when President Fillmore left office, but he retained an active interest in politics and forcefully supported the Union. At the end of the Civil War he advocated amnesty for the South. He died at Newport, R.I., August 18 1870.
