Other Information

USS DEWEY earned the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 13 Battle Stars and the World War II Victory Medal during her Naval career.

USS DEWEY was at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941.

NAMESAKE - Named in Honor of Admiral George Dewey USN (December 26 1837 – January 16 1917) an Officer of The United States Navy, best known for his victory (without the loss of a single life of his own forces due to combat) at The Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. He was also the only person in the history of the United States to have attained the rank of Admiral of The Navy, the most senior rank in The United States Navy.

Four ships of the US Navy have been named in his honor - USS Dewey YFD-1, USS Dewey DD-349, USS Dewey DDG-45 and USS Dewey DDG-105.

The ships sponsor was Miss A. M. Dewey, great-grandniece of Admiral Dewey.
