Other Information

USS BATAAN earned the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 5 Battle stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal w/ "Asia" clasp, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal w/ 7 Battle stars, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, the United Nations Korean Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal during her Naval career.

USS BATAAN CVL-29 was at Tokyo Bay, September 2 1945 for the Japanese surrender ceremony.

NAMESAKE - Named after the Bataan peninsula, on Luzon island, Philippine Islands, the scene of heroic resistance by American and Filipino defenders against an overwhelming Japanese invading force during the initial phase of America's participation in World War II.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. George Murray, wife of Rear Admiral George D. Murray.

Two ships of the US Navy have borne the name BATAAN - USS Bataan CVL-29 and USS Bataan LHD-5
