Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Spruance Class Destroyer Keel Laid 29 August 1977 - Launched 22 November 1978 USS THORN DD-988 Commissioned 16 February 1980 - Decommissioned 25 August 2004 Sunk as target on 22 July 2006 off the east coast of the United States.

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. Other Information

NAMESAKE - Lieutenant Jonathan Thorn, USN (January 8 1779 – June 15 1811).

Two ships of the US Navy have borne the name THORN - USS Thorn DD-647 and USS Thorn DD-988.
