Dolphin Class Submarine Keel Laid 9 November 1962 - Launched 6 August 1968 USS DOLPHIN AGSS-555 Commissioned 17 August 1968 - Decommissioned 15 January 2007 Stricken from the Naval Vessel Register 15 January 2007 Currently a museum ship in San Diego Bay,     under the management of the San Diego Maritime Museum.

Other Information

NAMESAKE - A widely distributed and diverse group of 40 extant species of dolphins.

The ships sponsor was sponsored by Mrs. Margaret "Maggie" Awamura Inouye, wife of Daniel K. Inouye, United States Senator from Hawaii from 1963 until his death in 2012

Eight ships of the US Navy have borne the name DOLPHIN - USS Dolphin (1777 Cutter), USS Dolphin (1821 Schooner), USS Dolphin (1836 Brig), USS Dolphin (PG-24 Gunboat),
USS Dolphin (SP-318), USS Dolphin (SP-874), USS Dolphin SS-169 and USS Dolphin AGSS-555.
