Postmarks

Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

GREENE received 3 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation for World War II service

NAMESAKE - Commander Samuel Dana Greene, USN (February 11 1839 – December 11 1884)
Greene was appointed Acting Midshipman September 21 1855. He was Executive Officer in MONITOR during her classic battle with Ironclad C.S.S. VIRGINIA March 9 1862 and assumed command after his Captain Worden was wounded. He was also Executive Officer in MONITOR in the engagements in the James River, Va., April-May 1862, and when she foundered in a gale. Commander Greene died December 11 1884 at Portsmouth, N.H., and was buried in Bristol, R.I.
