THORNTON earned three battle stars for World War II service

THORNTON AVD-11 was at Pearl Harbor December 7 1941 at The Pearl Harbor Submarine Base

NAMESAKE - Captain James Shepard Thornton, USN (February 25 1826 – May 14 1875)

Two ships of the US Navy have been named in his honor; USS Thornton TB-33 and USS Thornton DD-270/APD-11
