Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Solace Class Hospital Ship
    Built 1927 at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Newport News, VA.

    Acquired by U.S. Navy 22 July 1940 and converted Hospital Ship

  4. Commissioned 9 August 1941 - Decommissioned 27 March 1946
    Struck from Naval Register 21 May 1946
    Transferred 18 July 1946 to MARCOM for disposal

  5. ANKARA (Commercial Service)
  6. Sold 16 April 1948 to The Turkish Maritime Lines
    Laid up 1977

    Scrapped at Aliaga, Turkey 1981

 

Naval Covers

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

USS SOLACE was at Pearl Harbor, December 7 1941

USS SOLACE earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, the American Defense Service Medal (with Fleet clasp), the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 7 Battle stars and the World War II Victory Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Named for the word meaning comfort or consolation in a time of distress.

Two ships of the US Navy have borne the name SOLACE - USS Solace AH-2 and USS Solace AH-5.
