Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Troop Transport
    Built in 1896 by Blohm and Voss, Hamburg, Germany

  1. BARBAROSSA (Passenger Liner)
  2. Owned and operated by the North German Lloyd Line
    Interned at Hoboken, New Jersey at the start of World War I and then seized when the United States entered the war 6 April 1917.

  3. USS BARBAROSSA ID-3012
  4. Acquired by the US Navy and commissioned 3 August 1917

  5. USS MERCURY ID-3012
  6. Renamed "MERCURY" (date unknown) - Decommissioned 27 September 1919

  7. USAT MERCURY
  8. Transferred to the War Department 27 September 1919
    Transferred to the United States Shipping Board in August 1920

    Sold for scrap in February 1924

 

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

USS MERCURY earned the World War I Victory Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - A Roman god represented with winged feet who served as messenger for the other gods; a silver‑white metal which is liquid at ordinary temperatures; the planet nearest to the Sun.

Seven ships of the US Navy have borne the name MERCURY - USS Mercury (1776 Ketch), USS Mercury (1781 Schooner), USRS Mercury (1807 Revenue Cutter), USS Mercury (1861 Sidewheel Steamer Tug), USS Mercury TT-3012,
USS Mercury AKS-20 and USNS Mercury T-AGM-21.
