This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Postmarks
This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

USS ENGLAND earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 10 Battle stars, the WWII Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon during her Naval career.
NAMESAKE - Ensign John Charles England, USNR (11 December 1920 - 7 December 1941)
England completed his training on 5 June 1941 and was commissioned Ensign, USNR, 6 June 1941. On 3 September 1941, he reported for duty in USS Oklahoma BB-37 and was killed in action during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, 7 December 1941. Ensign England survived the initial attack and escaped topside as the ship was capsizing. He remembered the men still in the radio room. He returned three times to the radio room, each time guiding a man to safety. He left to go back below decks for the fourth time and was never seen again. Ensign England's gallant efforts saved three, but cost him his life. He was one of twenty officers and 395 enlisted men who were killed on board USS Oklahoma that morning. Ensign John Charles England was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
Two ships of the US Navy were named in his honor - USS England DE-635 and USS England CG-22.
USS ENGLAND is credited with a record 5 sub sinkings in one week, a record that still stands.
