This variant applies to Types 1, 5, 6, 9, 2-2, 7-2, 9-2, 11-2, or 12-2. It indicates that the ship's name is at the bottom of the dial. In addition, when used in combination with the "n" variant in Types 2t, 7t or 9, it indicates that the ship's designation and hull number are separated from the ship's name and are at the bottom of the dial.

The above example is provided to show the normal placement of the ship's name in the dial of a Type 5 cancel in comparison to the u variant.

 

Variant nu for Types 2t, 7t or 9

Type 2tn, 7tn, and 9n cancels with variant u have the ship's name at the top of the dial and the hull designation and number at the bottom of the dial.
