Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Navy Unit Commendation w/ 1 star - Navy Battle "E" Ribbon - Navy Expeditionary Medal - National Defense Service Medal - Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal

NAMESAKE - Private First Class Fernando Luis Garcia USMC (October 14 1929 – September 5 1952)
Garcia was a member of The United States Marines and the first Puerto Rican to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Garcia was a Private First Class when he arrived in Korea. He was assigned to Company I, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, of the 1st Marine division. On the night of his death, he was posted about one mile from the enemy lines. The Korean enemies were attacking with grenades, bombs and other types of artillery. Garcia was critically wounded, but he led his team to a supply point to get hand-grenades. An enemy grenade landed nearby, and Garcia covered it with his body, sacrificing himself to save the lives of his fellow Marines. Garcia died instantly. For this heroic action, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor October 25 1953. PFC Garcia's parents were presented his Medal of Honor at a ceremony held in the Utuado City Hall in Puerto Rico.
